Mike Johnson

House Speaker Mike Johnson was a relatively obscure figure within Congress until Republicans ousted his predecessor Kevin McCarthy in October 2023, and weeks later elected Johnson as his replacement.

The Louisiana representative was an attorney before running for office, working on cases advocating for the reinstatement of anti-LGBTQ legislation and opposing abortion rights. Johnson was elected to Congress in 2017, and served as a member of the House Judiciary and House Armed Services Committees. On Jan. 6 he voted, along with 2019 other Republicans, to overturn the results of the 2020 election on behalf of former President Donald Trump.

Johnson's rise to the speakership brought increased scrutiny to his political life and personal views. A staunch Christian nationalist, Johnson has expressed his belief that America’s “depraved” culture has incurred the ire of God, and has blamed school shootings on the teaching of evolution and the acceptance of abortion. —Nikki McCann Ramírez
